About Goal

GOAL has been operating in Ethiopia since the early 1980s. GOAL is currently working in 60 districts throughout eight regions and two city administrations: Afar, Amhara, Benishangul Gumuz, Gambella, Oromia, Somali, South Ethiopia, Tigray, Addis Ababa, and Hawassa. In 2023/24, our operations were backed by a €30 million yearly budget, allowing for considerable investments in the capacity of over 700 Ethiopian employees, with women accounting for more than 40% of our workforce.

Our initiatives focus on crucial sectors such as nutrition, health, WASH (water, sanitation, and hygiene), livelihoods and food security, safeguarding, gender and social inclusion, protection, emergency shelter, and non-food items (NFIs). We focus on the most vulnerable communities, notably those affected by drought, conflict, displacement, disease outbreaks, flooding, and earthquakes.

GOAL is a humanitarian and non-governmental organization that has been working in Ethiopia for over 30 years to ensure that the world’s poorest and most vulnerable people, as well as those affected by humanitarian crises, have access to basic human rights such as adequate shelter, food, water and sanitation, healthcare, and education. GOAL undertakes a variety of multi-sectoral development, resilience, recovery, and humanitarian response projects while remaining sensitive to cross-cutting problems like gender, accountability, child protection, and HIV/AIDS. We are now working with pastoralists, agropastoralists, pastoral dropouts, rural smallholder farmers, rural/urban adolescents, and street children in Ethiopia to respond to humanitarian crises and develop resilience. We collaborate closely with local communities, local government, funders, and other critical actors. GOAL E Humanitarian Response focuses on nutrition, WASH, livelihoods, multipurpose cash, NFIs, and protection interventions across the country, whereas recovery and development focus on livelihoods, economic opportunities, health, health and nutrition system strengthening, and WASH, with a strong emphasis on integrated programming and a community-based approach in the Oromiya regional state. The street children program is carried out in collaboration with local partners in Addis Abeba and Hawassa.

We envision a future free of poverty, with resilient vulnerable communities, no impediments to well-being, and equal rights and opportunities for all. GOAL Ethiopia’s primary donors include Irish Aid, USAID/OFDA, EHF, ECHO, UNHCR, WFP, UNOCHA, and several private donors.
